By having a spring that is not only captive, but linear at full extension, you have good ground pressure even at near full flex, which dramatically adds to vehicle stability when off-roading. A short, hard spring transmits much more of the force from bumps back into the vehicle and doesn't allow the shock to actually do its job of controlling the movement of the suspension.
